The expressway route was decided with three important considerations in mind: first, avoiding bulldozing homes where possible; second, reducing costs; and third, limiting the number of intersections along the expressway so as to maximize traffic throughput. Accordingly, the expressway route tends to follow the cost paths calculated in an ArcGIS model. The two most important deviations in this route are (1) near I-15 between Payson and Spanish Fork; and (2) near the source point in the south part of the map. The first deviation was intended to serve as middle ground between two cost paths suggested in the model, which trended north and south of the selected route. The second deviation is explained by a desire to minimize destruction of homes to the north while avoiding creating new intersections along a major road to the south. I was able to accomplish these goals by rerouting the expressway since the costs through the area I’ve selected are not prohibitive.
